🛂 What Is the South Africa Volunteer Visa?

The South Africa Volunteer Visa permits foreign nationals to participate in non-remunerative volunteer work with registered non-profit organisations (NPO’S) or non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in South Africa. This includes activities in sectors like wildlife conservation, community development, healthcare, education, and environmental projects. ​

✅ Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the South Africa Volunteer Visa, applicants must:

• Be 18 years or older.
• Engage in unpaid volunteer work with a registered NPO or NGO.
• Provide a letter of invitation from the host organisation detailing the nature and duration of the volunteer work.
• Demonstrate sufficient financial means to support themselves during their stay.
• Possess a valid passport with at least 30 days’ validity beyond the intended departure date and at least two blank pages.
• Submit required medical and police clearance certificates.
• Provide proof of accommodation in South Africa.
• Present a return flight ticket or proof of sufficient funds to purchase one. ​

📄 Required Documents

When applying for the Volunteer Visa, you will need to submit:

• Completed DHA 1738 visa application form.
• Two recent passport-sized photographs.
• Valid passport (with at least 30 days’ validity beyond the intended departure date and two blank pages).
• Yellow fever vaccination certificate (if travelling from or through a yellow fever endemic area).
• Proof of sufficient financial means, such as:
  • Bank statements for the last three months showing a minimum balance of R3,000 per month.
  • Credit card statements or traveller’s cheques indicating available funds.
• Flight reservations corresponding to the dates provided in the host organisation’s confirmation letter.
• Police clearance certificates from all countries where you have lived for more than 12 months, in the last 5 years and not older than six months.
• Medical report (Form BI-811) completed by a registered medical practitioner, not older than six months.
• Radiological report confirming the absence of active pulmonary tuberculosis (exemptions apply for pregnant women and children under 12).
• Written undertaking to leave South Africa upon completing the volunteer work and not to engage in paid employment.
• Proof of accommodation, such as:
  • Confirmation from the institution providing accommodation.
  • Hotel reservation.
  • A letter from the host confirming the residential address, along with a utility bill and a copy of the host’s ID or passport.
• Letter of confirmation from the host organisation, including:
  • Description of the organisation and its registration number.
  • Details about your tasks, schedule, accommodation, and any secondary voluntary activities.
  • Statement confirming that you will not receive payment for your work. ​

💰 Costs and Processing Time

• Visa Fee: R425 (approximately $24). Additional service fees may apply if applying through a visa application centre.
• Processing Time: Approximately 6 to 8 weeks from the date of application submission.

📅 Validity and Extensions

• Validity: The Volunteer Visa is valid for up to three years and allows multiple entries into South Africa during this period.
• Extensions: You can apply for an extension if you need to stay longer. However, you cannot change your visa status to another type while in South Africa on a Volunteer Visa.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Bringing Family Members

Family members can accompany you to South Africa but must apply for their accompanying dependent visas. They are not permitted to work or study unless they obtain the necessary permits. ​You will need to show additional funds of R 3000.00 per dependent.

🛤️ Path to Permanent Residency

The Volunteer Visa does not lead to permanent residency in South Africa. To apply for permanent residency, you must hold a qualifying visa, such as a work visa, for a minimum of five years.
