The Critical Skills Visa, introduced in 2014 by the Department of Home Affairs, aims to attract highly skilled foreign workers to South Africa. This visa targets individuals with highly demanded skills.
To qualify, you must be on the South African Critical Skills List, have a valid job offer from a South African employer, and pass the points-based system.

A Critical Skills Visa offers several advantages for skilled foreign professionals seeking to work and live in South Africa:
Key Benefits:
1. Pathway to Permanent Residency: After accumulating five years of post-qualification work experience, you and your immediate family may be eligible to apply for permanent residency.
2. Family Rights: Your spouse and dependent children can also obtain visas to live and work in South Africa with you.
While both Critical Skills Visas and work permits allow foreign nationals to work in South Africa, they have distinct differences:
Critical Skills Visa: This visa targets individuals with highly specialized skills that are in demand in South Africa and require being on the Critical Skills List.
General Work Visa: A general work visa is a type of work permit that allows foreign nationals to work in South Africa for a specific employer and job.
Intra-Company Transfer Works Visa: An Intra-Company Transfer (ICT) visa allows foreign employees of multinational companies to work in South Africa for a specific period. This visa is typically granted to employees who are being transferred from a parent company or a subsidiary to a branch or affiliate in South Africa.
Corporate Workers Visa: A Corporate Work Visa is a type of work permit that allows foreign nationals to work in South Africa for a specific company.
To qualify for a Critical Skills Visa, an applicant must meet the following criteria:
An applicant may be granted a Critical Skills Work Visa if they score 100 points, have an occupation on the Critical Skills List, and meet all other requirements. Otherwise, if they score 100 points and meet all other requirements, they may be granted a General Work Visa.
